Schneider National Announces 2008 Ride of Pride Truck Driver
Freightliner chooses Schneider National for second consecutive year to steer
patriotic-themed truck honoring United States veterans and soldiers
GREEN BAY, Wis. – May 27, 2008 – For two years now, Schneider National, Inc., a premier provider of transportation, intermodal and logistics services and the nation’s largest truckload carrier, has been selected by Freightliner to receive the 2008 Ride of Pride, honoring United States veterans and soldiers. Gordon Turnovsky from Millington, Tenn., a driver with Schneider since 1992 and a member of the U.S. Army, will drive the Ride of Pride, which was added to the Schneider fleet of more than 10,000 trucks last week following its debut at the Ride of Freedom event in Washington, D.C.
Earlier this month, the Ride of Pride was escorted by hundreds of motorcyclists from Freightliner’s manufacturing plant in Cleveland, N.C. to Washington, D.C. On May 25 the truck participated in the Ride of Freedom, a procession around the capital with one million motorcyclists riding in support of our nation’s veterans, POWs and MIAs.
The one-of-a-kind Freightliner Cascadia™ is fully customized with symbols of America and the Armed Forces decaled over the orange Schneider cab. The 2008 truck was designed by employees at Freightliner’s manufacturing plant, just like the six Ride of Pride versions before it.
Last year’s driver, Lowell Wilderman, a 22-year Navy veteran and 19-year employee at Schneider National, said that being the chosen driver in 2007 was an honor. “I had seen pictures of the truck, but seeing it pull in and knowing that I would be driving it was amazing.” The recognition given to the driver is a humbling experience, he added. “This past year, everybody asked me if the truck was mine, so I told them that it’s everybody’s truck, for what it stands for,” said Wilderman. “I’m certain Gordon will enjoy this year as much as I have—it’s quite an honor.”
“Schneider was honored to be chosen by Freightliner employees as the official truckload carrier for the Ride of Pride vehicle for an unprecedented second year,” said Darel Schoening, regional maintenance director for Schneider National and project leader for the Ride of Pride tractor. “Based on the success of last year’s Ride of Pride, we had an overwhelming response from drivers who wanted to participate in the 2008 Ride of Pride experience. As one of the thousands of military vet drivers we have at Schneider, Gordon Turnovsky stood out based on his commitment to both our company and our country. Gordon has 16 years of service at Schneider and over 18 years of active duty in the U.S. Army.”
The 2008 Ride of Pride truck is a Freightliner Cascadia, a truck model launched last May. The vehicle boasts a comfortable interior, superior handling and improved fuel efficiency. It features a new DD15 455-560 horsepower engine from Detroit Diesel and variety of upgrades and accessories, from seats to mud flaps, donated by Freightliner suppliers.
