Taking care of business
“The Business of Trucking,” a new column written by financial planner, small fleet owner and former owner-operator Kevin Rutherford, makes its debut in this issue of Over the Road (see page 60). As the name implies, the column will focus on the business side of trucking, as seen from the driver’s perspective. The goal for all drivers is to be successful, and that’s what “The Business of Trucking” is all about. Kevin looks forward to answering your financial questions in future columns.
Kevin started his career as an owner-operator 18 years ago, running his one-truck operation with the sophistication of a much larger fleet of trucks. Over the years, his experience has evolved into a comprehensive slate of professional skills including operations, logistics, accounting and tax preparation and financial planning, making him an expert on independent trucking and what it takes to succeed “on the road” and “behind the desk.”
Speaking of success, attending the Mid-America Trucking Show, set for March 23-25 in Louisville, KY, is a great way to advance your career. If you make it to MATS, stop by our booth at the main entrance to the West Wing and the Recruitment Center. On Thursday from 1-3 p.m., Nextel Cup driver Ken Schrader will be signing autographs at our booth. See you there.
