David Oren named president of Dart
A long-planned leadership transition took place Oct. 1 at Dart Transit Company when David D. Oren succeeded his father, Donald G. Oren, as company president. The elder Oren will now serve as Chairman of the Board. The move brings the third generation of the Oren family into Dart’s presidential office. Founded in 1934 by Earl Oren, Don’s father and David’s grandfather, Dart grew rapidly in the 1980s under Don’s leadership.

Heartland Express heads West
Heartland Express announced a recent ex-pansion to the western United States. The company’s western operation, based in Phoenix, AZ, gives Heartland eight regional operating centers, plus its corporate headquarters. Heartland also announced it will replace its entire tractor fleet with 2005-and- newer International 9400i model tractors by the end of 2006.

TRL drivers ‘Dash for Cash’
The race for extra cash is on for drivers at TRL in the company’s “Dash for Cash” program that awards drivers for quality referrals. “Our best recruits come from our current drivers,” says TRL’s Lisa Rohland. For each referral hired, the referring driver receives $1,000 and is entered in the Dash for Cash contest worth an additional $2,500.

Schneider equips trucks with bypass technology
Schneider National is equipping its entire company fleet with PrePass Plus, the nation’s leader in the electronic pre-clearance of commercial vehicles at weigh stations and toll plazas. The company began installing the transponders in mid-May, with fleet-wide implementation to be completed this fall.

West Side announces new pay packages
West Side Transport announced a new pay package for experienced drivers. The pay rates, effective Nov. 1, include 41¢ per mile for over-the-road and Northeast regional drivers, 40¢ per mile for Midwest regional drivers and 38¢ per mile for Southeast regional drivers. Team drivers earn 48¢ per mile (split) for irregular routes and 42¢ per mile for dedicated routes. All drivers are also eligible for year-end bonuses.

Boyd Bros. boosts pay, benefits
Boyd Bros. announced a three-cent raise for owner-operators and will now use Blue Cross/ Blue Shield as their group health insurance ad-ministrator. A partnership with EyeMed gives Boyd drivers free vision coverage. Boyd also added PrePass Plus, a service that allows drivers to bypass scales and pay tolls electronically.

ATA’s Highway Watch program expands
The ATA announced that Richmond, VA-based Overnite Transportation is the first of the top-100 trucking companies to train 100 percent of its drivers in the Highway Watch program. Highway Watch utilizes the skills, experience and “road smarts” of America’s transportation workers to help prevent terrorists from using large vehicles or hazardous cargoes as weapons.
