‘The Best Educational Resource a Teacher Could Find’
Professional drivers who travel across North America might refer back to their fourth-grade geography class where they were expected to remember the names of the states. Dan Green helps his Trucker Buddy class learn more than just how to identify the states; he helps them to memorize the capitals and their abbreviations.
Matt is a student in Sandra Christian’s Alternative Education-al Services school in La Habra, CA. Writes Matt: “Mr. Green should be selected as the best Driver of the Month because he takes pictures of places in other states where he drives his truck, and he sends them to us so that we can know what other states and famous cities look like.”
Another student, Ana, writes that Mr. Green, “…gives us a reason to look up in the encyclopedia about famous people and places.” She and her classmates nominated Dan Green to be the Trucker Buddy of the Month because he helps them learn and makes their geography lessons come to life.
Sandra Christian has been a teacher in the Trucker Buddy program for more than eight years. She calls Mr. Green, “the best educational resource a teacher could find.” She uses his postcards and letters in her curriculum to enhance their math, history and cultural learning. “He is a prolific letter writer, showing the students how to observe life and record their observations,” she adds. “He inspires the students to keep a journal, reminding us that we are all ‘making history.’”
Dan, a company driver running with FFE, lives in Yuma, AZ. He is one of nearly 4,000 professional drivers who share their time with elementary classes throughout the world. The only criteria to be a Trucker Buddy is to be a truck driver, willing to send a postcard each week to a class in grades two through eight.
