Say What?
Question: When changing jobs, what do you look for in a company?

“Obviously, I look at the pay package. I check the benefits and the home time. All those things are important. The older I get, the more I look for something that is steady, like a dedicated run in a certain area. When I was younger, I went all over and didn’t mind so much, but I like being closer to home now. I also like it when a company is honest. If there’s a problem, be honest with me up front rather than cover it up!”
Richard Bollenbach, 51, Lake Ariel, PA

“Honesty is a big thing in any company operation. Teamwork is another thing I look for. Everyone benefits from having a good company atmosphere.”
Paul Reynolds, 60, Williston, FL
Professional driving experience: 20 years
“I look for the way they treat their people. I look at the quality of their equipment and the quality of their drivers. They have always treated me right. Everyone looks at the benefits package, the pay schedule, the whole nine yards. In my option, we’re the No. 1 carrier out here.”
Darrell Oliver, 50, Franklin, OH
Professional driving experience: 30 years
“I look for the same things everyone looks for: good pay, decent home time and health insurance.”
Patty Brodeur, 51, Elizabeth, CO
Professional driving experience: 14 years
“I look for flexibility. I’m an owner-operator, so I look for a company that lets me make my own decisions on how to drive my truck. We own the truck because we want to control our own destiny. We look for a company that trusts us to get that load where it needs to be. You don’t need to be looking over my shoulder. You don’t need to take money from me for my maintenance fee. You don’t have to take money from me for fuel. This is our business, and we have the ability to take care of business.” |
