Driven Women

Never unemployed

Dear GG—Why don’t my parents like truckers? I’ve always wanted to drive the big rigs since I was a kid. I’m 17 now. I’m not smart, but I’m pretty good mechanically, and I think I would love to travel. I do all the maintenance work on my own car.
I’ve been told most drivers are stupid, can’t get any other job and don’t like to be told what to do. They’re sloppy, lazy and are all dropouts. My parents are really upset that I want to drive a truck after I graduate next year. How do I go get a trucker license?

Theresa, first of all, your parents only want what’s best for you. Secondly, your parents, like many, have an engrained mental image of truckers that is nearly impossible to change. Lastly, you can find sloppy, lazy dropouts in nearly any profession, including those that require suits and ties.
For some drivers, trucking is in their blood. For others, skill, interest and lifestyle keep them driving, while others don’t know they have options. You’re 17, Theresa, so explore every available option, then make your decision. Most companies require that you be 21 to drive.
I bet you’re smarter than you think, Theresa. Go to college and get a degree, then if you still want to drive, you’ll be an educated trucker with unlimited options! I’ve met former police officers, Playboy bunnies, teachers, businessmen and women, lawyers and medical professionals who now drive a truck. With a degree and a CDL, you will never be unemployed unless you want to be.
